Complexity of the Stable Model Semantics for Queries on Incomplete Databases

چکیده
We study the complexity of consistency checking and query answering on incomplete databases for languages ranging from non-recursive Datalog to disjunctive Datalog with negation under the stable model semantics. We consider both possible and certain answers and both closedand open-world interpretation of C-databases with and without conditions. By reduction to stable models of logic programs we find that, under closed-world interpretation, adding negation to (disjunctive) Datalog does not increase the complexity of the considered problems for C-databases, but certain answers for databases without conditions are easier for Datalog without than with negation. Under open-world interpretation, adding negation to non-recursive Datalog already leads to undecidability, but the complexity of certain answers for negation-free queries is the same as under closed-world interpretation.

Expressive Power and Complexity of Partial Models for Disjunctive Deductive Databases 1
This paper investigates the expressive power and complexity of partial model semantics for disjunctive deductive databases. In particular, partial stable, regular model, maximal stable (M-stable), and least undeened stable (L-stable) semantics for function-free disjunctive logic programs are considered, for which the expressiveness of queries based on possibility and certainty inference is dete...

متن کاملContainment of Conjunctive Queries over Conceptual Schemata
Conceptual Modelling plays a fundamental role in database design since Chen’s Entity-Relationship (ER) model. In this paper we consider a conceptual model capable of capturing classes of objects with their attributes, relationships among classes, cardinality constraints in the participation of entities to relationships, and is-a relations among both classes and relationships. We provide a forma...
متن کاملApproximation Algorithms for Computing Certain Answers over Incomplete Databases
Certain answers are a widely accepted semantics of query answering over incomplete databases. Since their computation is a coNP-hard problem, recent research has focused on developing evaluation algorithms with correctness guarantees, that is, techniques computing a sound but possibly incomplete set of certain answers. In this paper, we show how novel evaluation algorithms with correctness guar...
